There has been a great deal of vacuous nonsense written over the past few days about the Googarola deal, with the worst of it adopting the absurd premise that Google’s entrĂ©e into the handset and set-top box businesses is a prelude to further disruption. (Although wireless patents are assumed to be the clear focal point of the deal, don’t forget that good old fashioned cable set-top boxes are a third of Motorola Mobility’s revenues, and represent the vast majority of MMI’s profits). In fact, it’s hard to imagine a strategy less likely to yield disruption.
— Bernstein Research’s Craig Moffett shreds the “Motorola helps Google take over your living room” argument (you’ll need to register to read the whole thing). My milder, less smart version.
